About Humane Bat Removal & Bat Exclusion Services.

As a customer, it’s good to understand a bit about how bat infestation is handled before you call someone. Bat control is handled differently than your everyday pest job. When you have bats in the attic, rather than trapping bats in cages or removing bats by hand, we use a method known as live bat exclusion. During the bat exclusion process, we hang what are known as “bat valves” or “one-way tubes” on the home. These devices are secured directly over areas where bats are coming in and out of the attic. Basically, the bat valve allows bats to exit the home unharmed, but they will be blocked from re-entry. Think of it as “a one-way door.” However, installing the bat valves is the EASY part. The rest of the home must also be completely sealed of exposed cracks and crevices.

Sealing the home of any and all open gaps is necessary to achieve a permanent solution to bat problems. Once the bats exit through the bat valves, they will try to get back inside. Furthermore, the bats will eventually realize they cannot get back inside the attic where we hung the bat valves, and so they will search relentlessly for another area to regain access. This is why the entire home must be completely sealed.

The process we just described is the only legal way to handle Traverse City bat removal. Bats are protected under State & Federal law. You are not permitted to kill a bat, unless there was one flying around inside the home, in which case, it may be euthanized in order to get the bat tested for rabies. Other than situations like that, evicting a bat colony from the attic must be done humanely. It is highly illegal to poison bats, shoot bats, trap bats, or basically do anything which involves harming or handling bats directly in any way.

Homeowners should not attempt bat removal themselves. Even if one wrong area is sealed, the bats can become trapped – this often results in the bats climbing down walls, and eventually, the bats end up INSIDE your home! Simply because they have no other way to get out… In short, imagine waking up at 2am to find 50 bats flying around your house! Instead of dealing with that kind of headache, call Northern Wildlife Services, LLC for bat removal and exclusion service in Traverse City, Central Lake, and Elk Rapids, Michigan.

Bat Guano Cleanup and Attic Remediation is a service Traverse City Michigan Bat Removal can offer once we get rid of the bats. Bats problems will often leave a mess in the attic, especially when a larger colony has taken residence in a home. We can offer to remove the bat waste/guano by doing a spot-clean, which is the cheaper option, or Traverse City Michigan Bat Removal can also offer to remove & replace your entire attic. This process involves sucking out all the insulation with an Attic Vac, blowing it into a dumpster, sanitizing, and then replacing the attic with freshly blown insulation. Your attic offers a highly important function to your home. To get the most economical service from us, ask your insurance company if they will cover attic damages the bats have left behind. We can work with your insurance company and get the job done relatively cheap.

The photo below shows an ineffective attempt to exclude bats with foam. As you can see from the bat guano the effort failed.

Interesting Info About The Bats Of Michigan

The species of bats we find causing infestation problems in Michigan are usually Big Brown Bats. Although, there can also be other species such as Little Brown Bats, the Big Brown’s relative. Little Browns Bats used to be the most common bats in Michigan. However, a disease called White Nose Syndrome killed off almost all of the Little Browns since 2009. Traverse City Michigan Bat Removal will sometimes find a colony here and there, but other businesses across the country have seen the same things we have. Big Browns have also been affected by the disease. That’s why humane bat removal is so important. We need these bats to stick around! Call us for Traverse City Bat Removal to ensure the bats survive the removal process.

There are two types of bat colonies in Traverse City Michigan

Big Brown Bats are a colonizing species, meaning they will congregate into groups. There are 2 types of bat colonies. The first is a “maternity colony” that consists of female bats that take care of their pups. These colonies can get huge, with larger colonies that will number over 300 individual bats. An average sized maternity colony we find in homes will be between 20-50 bats, which is still a big problem.

There are 2 types of bat colonies: maternity and Bachelor. Both colonies gather bats in large numbers in your attic or buildings.

The second type of colony that will infest buildings is known as a “Bachelor Colony.” These are comprised of exclusively male bats. The group will not be big at all. Usually, the numbers will be under 10 bats. Maternity colonies are FAR more likely to invade a structure due to the shelter a building offers. The females will utilize the conditions to nurture their pups until the babies are able to take flight in August and start a colony of their own. We want to be sure they can still do that!
